Gambang and the Making of Glass Beads

In a classic shopping mall or at a social gathering, when you see a gorgeous lady wearing a beautiful necklace perfectly matching her dress, you may wonder where she got that nice piece of jewelry. Then when you get a chance to look at it closely, you realize it’s made of beautifully curved glass beads! Looking at such a nice piece, one wonders where it came from: is it Indonesian, Chinese or from elsewhere? One always wonders how multiple layers of colors are mixed in one small piece of glass! To get answers to all those questions, 11 women of different nationalities went on a quest to discover the secrets behind those beautiful pieces of glass. They had one common goal: to learn how to make glass beads....

 

L.....Is For Lurah

I found a battle-scarred behemoth of a desk at a favorite “antique” shop, and was told, “Yah, itu meja Lurah(1).” Since then I’ve been impressed by the title:whoever sat behind that desk obviously commanded respect. This is no empty illusion, as head of a regional subdistrict, or kelurahan, Bp. Lurah is the highest-ranking government official most Indonesians will deal with face-to-face.

This police station covers Menteng and Cikini, two of the most affluent areas of Jakarta. Seventy-two embassies and ambassadors’ homes are located in this district. Vice President Yusuf Kalla has his official residence here. The Governor of Jakarta KPK. Sutioso and Ibu Megawati live here, while Bpk. Soeharto owns a whole street.
